West Beyond the West Portal

  1. Newspapers and OCR

Technical Subcommittee recommended not passing newspaper OCR to Canadiana as it floods search results with newspaper pages over potentially more relevant results.  Brian suggests clarifying with Canadiana whether or not there could be some technical solution that could filter out the full text and that could be toggled off or on.

  1. Development update
  • Continuing to recruit metadata for the portal
  • Vancouver Island University is the latest institution to contribute metadata.  It should be exposed in the portal later this month.
  • UBC Library has hired an interaction designer to work on several projects. He will begin work on some portal enhancements soon

Metadata Wrangler

  • VIU metadata has been submitted to Canadiana
  • Coop Student will continue metadata work in January
  • Planning to recruit as much metadata as possible before the student arrives

Hosting Service

  • Development of AtoM 2.0 is now complete
  • The hosting service will be transferred from dev to production later this week.
  • Once live, an announcement will go out via email to past BCHDP recipients
  • Email to coalition as well

Mike to follow up with Canadiana re solution see if there is a way newspaper OCR can be switched on or off
5. Communications Update  Along with the WBTW branding alignment with the BCBib, logos will be created to accompany promotional materials for print, web and email.

Several emails planned where text can be passed along by Coalition members to their constituents or included in their own communications: WBTW Portal, Hosting Service, periodic updates about new additions.

Next Meeting: Hoping to have another meeting before the new year. Ideally we would like to have one face-to-face meeting and we’ll investigate using skype for those wishing to attend remotely.  A portion of the next meeting will be dedicated to a strategy discussion.
