Agenda Item Summary Action

1. Introductions

Leigh Anne Palmer attended by phone on behalf of Anita Cocchia and BCELN. Theresa Mackay, Executive Director of the BC Museums Association was welcomed to the committee. Eka Grguric, BCDC Co-op student, was welcomed to the meeting.
2. Co-op Position Eka has started at the BCDC’s co-op student for the winter term.  She is working with Mike and focusing on metadata wrangling and supporting clients in adopting the hosting service.To date Eka has set up a metadata harvester and has acquired metadata from BCIT.  Data wrangling will commence soon.
3. Review of Minutes from Last Meeting / Business Arising Mike updated the committee on the issue of full text newspapers in the WBTW portal and whether Canadiana could recommend a solution that could allow for full text to be toggled on/off:
Canadiana doesn’t distinguish between newspapers and other content so there is no straightforward way of identifying newspaper text. Because the CMR schema does distinguish serial publications, we might be able to exclude full text based on this attribute. However: serials are not always encoded as such and may actually be recognized as monographs; and all other serials would have full text excluded this way as well.

4. BC Bibliography Project Update   On behalf of Allan Bell, Simon updated the group on the most recent BC Bibliography meeting, Nov. 22, 2013.The group reviewed the latest draft of the BC Bib browse/search function, integration into the UBC Digital Library framework and alignment with the West Beyond the West Portal. As of Nov. 2013, the BC Bibliography project included over 500 titles.
5. Technical Subcommittee Portal

  • UBC has hired an interaction designer who, among other projects will work on WBTW and the BC Bib search interface.
  • Mock-ups of the new search bar, header and logo were shared.
  • A development environment has been set up at UBC and the WBTW portal is being worked on now.

Metadata Wrangler

  • Vancouver Island University metadata has been submitted to Canadiana and is now available in the WBTW portal.
  • Coop Student (Eka) is now working on metadata wrangling
  • OAI-PMH harverster has been set up.
  • Data has been harvested from BCIT. Planning on harvesting from Prince George Public Library next.
  • Metadata has been received from VPL and will be wrangled and resubmitted.

Hosting Service

  • Development of AtoM 2.0 is now complete
  • Terrace Public Library is our first institutional client
  • Once the collection has been populated we will promote the hosting service widely through email
  • Email to coalition as well
6. Planning for 2014 The committee discussed options for a late spring meeting with a focus on long-term planning for the Coalition and related services.Options discussed included a possible retreat or a two-hour in person session dedicated to planningTopics to include: operationalization and long-term sustainability of the Coalition services, a review of governance needs for the next phase of the Coalition’s work.Options for meeting dates in May to be sent out.
